UPDATE

May 5th. It's TUNA TIME! We are now seeing AHI (Yellowfin Tuna) at 180 pounds outside the Harbor. The bite is on with the afternoon high tide. Wind is up and its time to Yank and Crank!

PORT ALLEN FISHING CLUB TOURNAMENT JUNE 20th. Interested anglers (2) call in advance. Experience this 10 hour, 6:00am to 4:00pm, fishing marathon with Luau to follow weigh in.

Without question 2007 was the best Tuna Season in 30 years. I reported that Marlin were stacking up and reaching over 700 pounds and on February 21 st, 2008 we got the proof. The Big Ta Do pulled in a Pacific Blue Marlin over 720 pounds. We spent 1 hour and 20 minutes convincing this little lady to come to the boat and a good 20 minutes more bringing her onto the deck. A truly remarkable specimen she will be proudly displayed at angler Rod Lechers residence in Prince George, Canada. Joe Bloomfield holds the resined bill on Koa wood mount.

Fishing action slowed in the winter months and we picked up the pace by dropping on the ledge for Giant Trevally, Gray Snapper, Shark and powerful Amberjack. A week of Mako shark hanging at the buoy brought enthusiastic action by some east coast fishermen. We hooked them up and relocated these 10 foot predators about 2 miles from the buoy and got back to work stacking up the Yellow fin tuna. In addition to shark mayhem a Christmas run for Yellow fin came swiftly lasting about 3 weeks leaving us with some 110 pound Ahi for the holidays.

Summer is upon us again and the Tuna are beginning to congregate at the AA Buoy just 3.5 miles outside Port Allen. Mahi and Ono (Wahoo) are running inside and out. Ono have been between 30 and 60 pounds which is very nice in Hawaiian waters where the Hawaii State Record is 133 pounds, established in 2002.

While 2007 will be fondly remembered by many Hawaiian fishermen we are amping to see if 2008 brings us more 290 pound AHI.

BERTRAM HISTORY

"The 31 has become a benchmark both in terms of sea keeping ability and rugged fiberglass construction. It has had a reputation from the start as a boat that will take you out and bring you back."
(Soundings, May 1994).

"They went to rogues and royalty, grizzled marlin captains and
fair-weather sailors. Many of them are still tearing across the
whitecaps..."

"What happened on that gusty April day in the Gulf Stream and on across the clear, rough waters on the Bahama Bank would forever alter
powerboating," reported Soundings magazine (May 1994)

"No one else
came in. The rest of the fleet returned to port or finished the next day."
"It changed the face of yachting forever", said Jim Martenhoff

"Knifing through those six-foot seas at 30 knots, this little 23-footer stopped every sailor...in his tracks. No one had ever seen powerboat performance to approach it." Bertram was impressed enough to commission a wooden 30-footer from Hunt.

When you hear people talking about the Bertram 31, this is it. Possibly the most famous sport fishing boat ever built, continuously in production for 25 years right up to 1986, with the last year dubbed the "Silver Anniversary Edition." "Unquestionably what made this boat such a big seller are her gorgeous lines. If you haven't fallen in love with her (Oh, yeah, it is a HER!), go buy a lesser breed." David Pascoe

"Arguably the most famous modern boat design ever built, the Bertram 31 has achieved nearly cult status, infecting boaters around the world." Unknown

"Bertram Yacht exists because of the 31—a single design that revolutionized offshore powerboat racing and changed the way yachtsmen used their boats."" Still, she's as capable and safe a boat in heavy seas as you will find—and she is a thrill to command and a pleasure to look at." Jay Coyle Yachting Magazine
